I’ve been a paying subscriber here at Medium for two years, and during that time I’ve learned a lot. Nevertheless, I have decided that it’s time for me to depart. I don’t expect to find any greener pastures; I have simply lost interest in trying to deal with people.I’ve been discussing matters with people on the Internet since the 1980s. I’m not kidding; back then, of course, there was no Web; it was all done on discussion forums, and back in the earliest days, on ByteNet, we were running at 300 baud and you could actually read the text as…

Republicans have an adversarial relationship with reality. As Stephen Colbert put it, “Reality has a well-known liberal bias.” Republicans like to impose their preferences upon reality, calling them “alternative facts”. Mr. Trump’s inauguration crowd was the biggest in history. Climate change is a hoax. The Covid-19 pandemic is winding down. A vaccine will be ready before election day. On and on they go, stomping all over truth like Godzilla stomping on Tokyo.

Sometimes this penchant for an alternative reality is merely pathetic; sometimes, as in the case of Covid-19, it is dangerous. …

Let’s assume that Truth, Justice, and the American Way triumph on Tuesday and Donald Trump is overthrown in a landslide. He’ll fight it, of course, but, again, let’s assume that his defeat is assured. What happens next?

Do you really think that Mr. Trump will accept defeat? Of course not! When somebody hurts him, he hurts them back. If America, in his opinion, betrays him, then he’s going to hurt America.

He’ll begin with Presidential pardons. He’ll pardon everybody who ever said anything nice about him. He’ll pardon every Republican politician ever convicted of any sort of crime. He’ll pardon…

Here’s an interesting possibility.

First, we know that it is most likely that Mr. Biden will win the election. It’s not a certainty, but it is more likely that Mr. Biden will win than that Mr. Trump will win.

Second, we know that Mr. Trump will utilize every ploy he can to reverse the results of the election. From his previous refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, as well as a number of other comments he has made, it seems likely that he will encourage violent behavior from his most ardent supporters.

Suppose, then, that these most…

Here’s a truly wild and crazy idea: if China ever hopes to regain Taiwan, the next few weeks are probably the best chance it will ever have. Let me walk you through the logic leading to this hard-to-believe speculation.

Taiwan will NEVER consent to unification

It was conceivable that Hong Kong’s experience with the “one country, two systems” scheme would convince Taiwan that unification with China would be safe. However, China’s egregious violation of its agreements this summer, as well as other aggressive moves on its part against civil rights inside China, provide compelling proof that China would not honor any promises it made to Taiwan…

The American sage Daniel Patrick Moynihan once wrote:

“Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.”

These days, however, facts and opinions have become so blurred that many people think that their own facts are just as good as anybody else’s. This is especially true of young people, who have always considered themselves at least as knowledgeable (and often more knowledgeable) than older people. Here’s another quote, this one attributed to Mark Twain:

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around…

You make idle hot air, meaningless verbiage bereft of any logical support. You do not know how to think clearly. I see no point in wasting further time with you. I'll be blocking you after you'd had a chance to read this.

Most of us think of Covid-19 primarily in terms of the number of people whom it has killed. As I write this, the body count is running around 180,000, with about 800 more per day. This number itself is astonishing. The terrorists on 9/11 killed a mere 3,000 people, and the nation rose up in fury and attacked Iraq, killing perhaps half a million Iraqis. But 60 times as many deaths elicits a sad shrug of the shoulders.

There’s a story about the Russian peasant of old times: the soldiers have come through, killing his wife and children, making off…

America is a messed-up place. We’ve got big problems: the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, trigger-happy police, Donald Trump, and a zillion other problems. Most young people are pessimistic about their futures. Things are looking pretty sucky nowadays.

We can, at least, look forward to a probable Blue Tsunami in November that will sweep the Republican Party out of power. But there’s just enough of a chance that the Republicans will hold on to enough power to prevent us from solving our problems. Worse, they’ll probably return to power in the future and will do everything possible to ruin this country…

Six months ago I posted an essay entitled “An Open Letter to Black Writers on Medium”. It presented the hypothesis that blacks might find more success in America if they decided to integrate into American society. Unsurprisingly, that essay prompted a great many angry replies from blacks who insist that America’s problems with race relations are exclusively the fault of whites, most or all of whom they deem to be racist. A number of them accused me of racism for suggesting otherwise.

I have spent a lot of time mulling over those comments, and gathering more information, and I think…
