“But I do know this: impeachment is the right thing to do.”
Hmm… ‘right’ is a troublingly vague adjective here. Perhaps you mean ‘morally correct’. Perhaps you mean ‘politically appropriate’. I won’t guess. But I will tell you this: it would be a political mistake to launch an impeachment process now.
The primary reason for this is the incontrovertible fact that the Senate will never vote to convict Mr. Trump. It is all but certain that, if the House impeaches Mr. Trump, the Senate will not convict him. The end result will be lots of sturm und drang without any consequence. The Republicans tried this with Mr. Clinton and it hurt their electoral results in 2000. Even though Mr. Bush just barely eked out a victory (with a lot of help from the Supreme Court), a number of Republican Congressional races were lost by close enough margins that their loss can at least partly be attributed to the impeachment.
Far better for the Democrats to continue pursuing the investigations currently under way. They should not be in any rush; they should aim for a steady stream of dirt to dominate the news cycle every week between now and November 2020. There’s a mountain of dirt for them to uncover, and digging it out will take a lot of work.
Remember, the goal here should not be merely electing a Democratic President. Our goal should be establish that the entire Republican Party is rotten to the core, and to trigger a Democratic tsunami of such magnitude that the Republican Party is effectively obliterated from the political scene for the next four years.
