Dream on, Mr. Ward. You are so convinced of your righteousness that you sincerely believe that everybody else thinks the same way you do. You were dead certain that Mr. Sanders would win the primaries. Now that he’s lost, you’re dead certain that he could still, somehow, win the general election. And you’re already pulling out that dead horse of conspiracy theories that somehow the Evil Establishment has managed to twist the vote counts to contradict ‘the will of the people’.
But ‘the will of the people’ has clearly been established: the Democratic voters much prefer Mr. Biden to Mr. Sanders. And if Mr. Sanders is too far to the left for Democratic voters, surely you can draw the appropriate conclusions regarding his acceptability to the general public.
Mr. Biden was not my first choice for the nomination; I preferred Ms. Warren. But I’m not going to pout over the fact that she didn’t win. Mr. Biden is the only person who can save us from Mr. Trump, and I have no qualms about committing myself whole-heartedly to Mr. Biden’s support.
I hope you will be able to get past your disappointment over Mr. Sanders’ loss and turn to the next task: the defeat of Mr. Trump. He poses an existential threat to our republic; Mr. Biden does not. That makes our choice clear.
