I certainly share your frustration over gender pronoun acrobatics. I confess that I have caved in to the pressures to use 'they/them' in most cases. It irks me that, when writing, I must take a few extra seconds to come up with a construction that satisfies both the requirement of making sense AND is genderly virtuous. But in a few cases in which somebody has pushed too hard on the matter, I have responded by resorting to the pronoun "it". 😄
