I suspect that the only person capable of unifying us is Michele Obama. She alone enjoys the trust and respect of a large enough segment of the American people to shove compromise down the throats of the divisive elements of our body politic. However, she refuses to run and I don’t blame her.

It may well be that we aren’t ready to be unified. The blame does not fall equally on both sides. While some progressives (Mr. Sanders seems to be an example) will never work with conservatives, I doubt that any of the current Republicans are willing to cooperate with Democrats to rebuild the country. So far, the fear of the catastrophic consequences of political stubbornness is too weak. If we’re lucky, we’ll see a Blue Tsunami in 2020 powerful enough to shatter the Republican Party and force it to purge itself of its uncompromising elements. Otherwise, the only thing that will teach the American people that compromise is the lifeblood of democracy will be a period of political violence.
