I watched his comments. My impression is that the first part of his comments was reporting on the opinions of other people: people he ‘pressed hard’. In other words, he was reporting on OTHER PEOPLE’S xenophobia. The comment on assimilation was clearly his own, and I do not think that it was necessarily offensive. After all, assimilation is, OVER THE LONG RUN, of benefit to the children of the immigrants. My impression is that his mistake lay in running together two separate comments and not taking the time to fully lay out his meaning — an understandable mistake in the news show format in which he was participating. In any event, he apologized unreservedly, so I suggest that we all just move on.
