I went back and reviewed our entire discussion, and came to two conclusions:

  1. We use terms like “money”, “loan”, and “tax” in different ways that make it impossible for us to communicate effectively. We’re just spinning our wheels. Therefore, we need to revert to more basic terms for which there is no semantic spread: “wealth” meaning “the sum of goods and services”. I deeply hope that we can agree on this meaning of “wealth”.
  2. Way back in ancient times, we began this discussion by disagreeing over the desirability of paying reparations to black people. Rather than use words like “pay” and “reparations”, I propose that we instead talk about “transferring wealth to black people”. That should be fundamental enough that we don’t get into semantic issues. I claim that you cannot transfer wealth to somebody (say, black people), without depriving somebody else of that wealth. Can you agree with my claim?
