What’s the problem with this line of reasoning:

1. If the House passes a bill of impeachment, the Senate will hold a show trial extolling Mr. Trump, and will “totally and completely exonerate him”.

2. Mr. Trump will use “totally and completely exonerated” to blunt the impact of the results of the many investigations into his activities.

3. Mr Trump is more likely to win re-election in 2020 if he has been “totally and completely exonerated” than if the House simply publishes the results of its investigations.

4. Therefore, passing a bill of impeachment will increase Mr. Trump’s chances of re-election.
